Brrrrrrrr! Its cold in Sydney and everyone seems to be in the mood for intense reds and divine fortified wines. We invite you to ‘get fortified’ and indulge your palates with some hedonistic deliciousness.
Turning first to Rutherglen, Australia’s home to the finest fortified wines, we feature the indulgent Stanton & Killeen Rutherglen Muscat and Port. Established in 1948, Stanton & Killeen are one of the pioneering family owned wineries in the Rutherglen and are receiving good recognition for their efforts, including Best Fortified at the 2007 Hobart Wine show for their Classic Rutherglen Muscat (see below).
Rutherglen may be Australia’s home of fortified wines, but the Douro Valley in Portugal is where Port was defined in the 1700’s. Fonseca, one of the first family houses which has grown in stature and importance since it was founded in 1822. By 1840 it was already the second largest shipper of Port wine and today it is still one of the leading houses. Fonseca strive for quality, complexity and structure and this is evident in the Tawny Porto NV featured below.
Last, but certainly not least, Woodstock from McLaren Vale in South Australia graces us with their signature Very Old Fortified. Formerly known as Tawny Port it holds a special place in the Woodstock range. McLaren Vale pioneer Doug Collett (winemaker of Woodstock from 1973) first crushed fortified wines in the 1960’s
